Training has been identified as the most important factor in reducing accidents at work (HSE). There is a lot of supporting evidence but, sadly, this has been gathered following fatal or other accidents resulting in serious injury.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations make it a legal requirement for employers to provide adequate training for operators of machines and equipment. Those machines must also be maintained in a safe condition.
Machines and equipment are expensive; training in their correct use can reduce downtime and make the workforce more efficient. Employers are looking for trained personnel and favour those who have Lantra Awards qualifications.
There are many and varied courses available from Lantra Awards; too many to list. Please see under Technical Awards at www.lantra-awards.co.uk or call us for more information. All courses are certificated and most can be either assessed for a Lantra Awards Basic Training Certificate or non assessed in preparation for an independent NPTC assessment (NPTC required for pesticides application).
The Lantra Awards Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) route is aimed at those persons who do not intend to use chainsaws regularly as part of their normal work. The two courses allow operators to crosscut, maintain the machine and fell trees to a maximum diameter at felling height of 200mm. Assessment takes place during the course and successful candidates receive a Certificate of Basic Training recognised by HSE and under the PUWER.
Courses following the non-assessed route prepare candidates for independent NPTC assessment following the training course. This allows persons to start with unit CS30 (crosscut and maintain the machine) and progress to unit CS31 (felling trees to 380mm diameter at felling height) and all the other units in the forestry and arboriculture scheme. These courses are aimed at persons who require unit CS31 or those who are training to take up tree work as a full time occupation.
Courses are run as soon as sufficient numbers are booked and there is an Instructor available. It is advisable to make enquiries early in order to receive the training when it is most convenient for you.
Courses are usually run on site so that the most relevant machines and equipment are used in surroundings familiar to the candidates. However, it is also possible to use various other venues when this is necessary or more convenient.
PA1 – Foundation Module. Covers legislation, storage, records, labels etc and is compulsory. The assessment is computer based and takes place at a test centre.
PA2 – Field crop sprayer applicator unit. Covers the use of boom sprayers mounted on tractors or other prime movers. The assessment usually takes place at the candidates normal place of work.
PA6 – Hand held sprayer applicator unit. Covers the use of knapsack or other hand held applicators. The assessment usually takes place at the candidates normal place of work.
PA2 and PA6 are BOTH required if both applicators are to be used.
The Lantra awards Certificate of Basic Training lasts for 5 years after which a refresher course and assessment are required to renew it.
NPTC certificates of Competence last for life.
Please remember that an update to TRAINING is required by law on a 3 to 5 year basis but re-assessment is not required.
The law requires adequate training to be provided. Lantra Awards training courses have been developed by industry and HSE to follow industry best practice. Other training could be as comprehensive but can you take the risk that it is not? Cut corners on training and you really do put yourself and your staff at risk.
YES. YES. YES. It is our personal experience that when training is arranged following an accident, it is often the most experienced members of staff who have been injured. This is by far the most expensive way of organising your training.
If you have any additional questions regarding training of any kind, please get in touch. If we can not help then we know someone who can.
